Peter Moffatt joined the Overseas Department of the Bank of England in 1968. His international work has involved liaison with European Community institutions and the Bank for International Settlements.

He was a bank supervisor during the 1970s and later became Secretary of the City Capital Markets Committee. Leaving the Bank in 1987, he became a compliance officer in investment banking with PaineWebber and JP Morgan and then in investment management with John Govett and Framlington.

He has served on legal and regulatory committees of the Association of Investment Trust Companies, the Association of Unit Trusts and Investment Funds and the Financial Services Authority. He joined the Commission in June 2000.
